The Project
Elliot Denburg has spent a lifetime exploring art, color, materials, and the world around him. His story begins in Cambridge and Boston in the early 1970s, with shared studios, late-night conversations, and a constant atmosphere of experimentation. Encounters with artists like Willem de Kooning, Helen Frankenthaler, and Tony Smith became part of a much larger practice of looking, questioning, and exploring.
That same spirit of discovery shaped the website. We didn’t set out to build another standard artist portfolio. Instead, we wanted the experience to feel closer to spending an afternoon with Elliot, hearing his stories, learning what has influenced him, and gradually getting to know the person behind the paintings.
What We Did
We structured the site around Elliot’s story, personality, and work. Visitors move fluidly between his history, influences, creative thinking, and the paintings themselves. Some sections are conversational and personal; others dig into materials, techniques, and process. The result feels less like browsing a portfolio and more like getting to know Elliot.
The Animation
Animation plays a quiet but important role. Images, text, and sections reveal themselves as visitors move through the site, creating a natural rhythm and encouraging exploration rather than passive scrolling. The movement adds character without ever pulling focus from the artwork.
Our Process

We began by learning about Elliot, his history, influences, personality, work, and approach to making art.
02 | Creative Direction
We built the visual direction and site structure around his story, rather than defaulting to the usual artist website formula.
03 | Content & Storytelling
We organized his experiences, influences, process, exhibitions, and artwork into a narrative visitors could move through naturally.
04 | Design & Development
We designed and built the site, including the presentation of the work, interactive elements, and custom animation.
05 | Final Refinement
We refined details throughout to ensure everything felt cohesive, considered, and true to Elliot.
The Result
The finished site is deliberately different from a typical artist website. It feels like getting to know Elliot. You move through his early years in Cambridge and Boston, his immersion in the art world, his ongoing exploration of color and materials, his travels, and the life that has shaped the work.
Some sections simply introduce the person. Others look more closely at the technical side of the paintings and how they’re made. Together, they create something more personal than a portfolio, an extension of who Elliot is, how he sees the world, and the art that comes from it.
